Bourbon Cough Syrup

It appears like winter colds strike with some vengeance these days, at the end of this season. In my house we drink virtually gallons of ginger and also honey teaduring these cold months. Fresh ginger herbal tea is delicious, and it wards off colds pretty fast. But when I was felled a week ago by an especially nasty cough, I had to turn and try something more powerful.

Not to become all graphic and anything, but this hacking cough just wouldn’t stop; I felt much like the consumptive heroine of my own, personal Regency adventure. The coughing held me up throughout the night, but I can’t stand drugstore cough syrup; it never appears to help, and the side-effects get me woozy. So I turned instead to a more sensible remedy: bourbon.

Well, it’s actually honey that is the key, I think. But the bourbon certainly doesn’t hurt. Taking a whole spoonful of honey has been proved to be very effective in calming nighttime coughs (that, and gargling salty water, which is yet another very effective natural remedy of a bad cough). Downing spoonfuls of honey is really a little rich for me personally, so I combined a tiny tumbler of the hot remedy several nights in a row.

It’s basically warm bourbon and lemon juice, with a heaping aiding of honey. I cut it with some water, too, but that’s optionally available. It’s an effortless nightcap, steaming and hot, with a rigid shot of booze to get you to sleep, lemon for Vitamin C, and all of the sweet honey to help it go down easy.

  • 1/2 lemon, juiced (about 2 ounces)
  • 2 ounces bourbon whisky
  • Bourbon Cough Syrup intended for Grownups
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 2-4 ounces drinking water (optional)

Mix the bourbon, lemon juice, and water (when using) inside a tumbler or cup and heat inside the microwave for around 45 seconds. (You may also do this on the stovetop in a tiny saucepan. ) Take away and add the honey. Whisk to mix, then microwave again for another 45 secs.

If you’re sick, it’s best never to drink this too hot; a good warm temperature is much better. Take it in bed and drink it slowly while reading a book. Sleep well!
