What exactly is codeine?

Codeine is one of several drugs called narcotic pain medicines.

Codeine is helpful to treat mild or moderately severe pain.

Codeine may also be taken for purposes not listed on this medication guide.

Important information regarding codeine

Codeine may be habit-forming and really should be used only by the individual it had been prescribed for. Never share codeine with someone else, especially someone having a history of substance abuse or addiction. Keep the medication inside a place where others cannot reach it.

Do not consume alcohol. Dangerous side consequences or death can happen when alcohol is combined with a narcotic pain medicine. Check your foods and medicine labels to make sure these products don’t contain alcohol.

Never take codeine within larger amounts, or for a longer time than recommended by the doctor. Follow the directions in your prescription label. Tell your doctor if your medicine seems it isn’t working as effectively in relieving the pain.

Codeine may damage your thinking as well as your reactions. Be careful should you drive or do something that requires you being alert. Do not quit using codeine abruptly, or you may have unpleasant withdrawal signs or symptoms. Ask your doctor how to prevent withdrawal symptoms whenever you stop using codeine.
